Swiss-American Society of Pittsburgh

Overview

The Swiss American Society of Pittsburgh was founded in 1962 and chartered as a not-for-profit Pennsylvania Corporation in 1966. Currently, the membership consists of approximately 75 families mostly from Pittsburgh and the surrounding communities, but we have a small number of members living outside the area, including Redmond, WA, Chicago and, of course, Switzerland.

Purpose

The Society was formed to:

  • Achieve a closer social and cultural contact among Swiss and descendants of Swiss
  • Cultivate and strengthen the bonds of friendship between the Swiss and American people
  • Acquaint Swiss and Americans with scientific, cultural life and achievements of both nations to promote good relationships and understanding between their people
  • Host visiting Swiss dignitaries and assist new arrivals

Membership

Membership in the Society is open to any person interested in promoting and achieving the Purpose of the Society. You need not be Swiss or of Swiss decent. An individual or Family membership is $10.00 per year. To join, you need to fill out a short application. Application forms are available for download here or from Edith Sutterlin, Membership Secretary (724.934.9191) or any Board Member.

Activities

The Society holds three regularly scheduled social events:

  • A Spring event held in late April or May - recently we've featured a Swiss Night at the Teutonia Männerchor
  • A Swiss Independence Day Picnic typically held on the Saturday nearest August 1st at one of the local parks - a catered meal featuring Swiss cuisine is available and picnic baskets are welcome
  • Christmas Luncheon typically held the first Saturday in December

More details are available in our newsletter. Download our Summer 2008 newsletter in PDF format.

The Society has been actively promoting the construction of a Swiss classroom at the University of Pittsburgh Cathedral of Learning and is assisting with the fund raising. We have a room reserved and have raised over $110,000 to date from Members and friends. We also sponsor other events, such as a group trip the Sängerfest in New Glaurus.
