Overview

The Swiss American Society of Pittsburgh was founded in 1962 and chartered as a not-for-profit Pennsylvania Corporation in 1966. Currently, the membership consists of approximately 75 families mostly from Pittsburgh and the surrounding communities, but we have a small number of members living outside the area.

Purpose

The Society was formed to:

  • Achieve a closer social and cultural contact among Swiss and descendants of Swiss
  • Cultivate and strengthen the bonds of friendship between the Swiss and American people
  • Acquaint Swiss and Americans with scientific, cultural life and achievements of both nations to promote good relationships and understanding between their people
  • Host visiting Swiss dignitaries and assist new arrivals

The Swiss-American Society has achieved its goal and raised over $300,000 for the construction of a Swiss Nationality Room at the the U of P. Room 321. The room dedication is planned for the Spring of 2012. The Swiss-American Society is now promoting the establishment of a endowment fund for scholarships for the University of Pittsburgh students for study in CH. We also sponsor other events, such as a group trip the Sängerfest in New Glaurus.
