Overview

The Swiss American Society of Pittsburgh was founded in 1962 and chartered as a not-for-profit Pennsylvania Corporation in 1966. Currently, the membership consists of approximately 75 families mostly from Pittsburgh and the surrounding communities, but we have a small number of members living outside the area.

Purpose

The Society was formed to:

  • Achieve a closer social and cultural contact among Swiss and descendants of Swiss
  • Cultivate and strengthen the bonds of friendship between the Swiss and American people
  • Acquaint Swiss and Americans with scientific, cultural life and achievements of both nations to promote good relationships and understanding between their people
  • Host visiting Swiss dignitaries and assist new arrivals

The Society has been actively promoting the construction of a Swiss classroom at the University of Pittsburgh Cathedral of Learning and is assisting with the fund raising. We have a room reserved and have raised over $175,000 to date from Members and friends. We also sponsor other events, such as a group trip the Sängerfest in New Glaurus.
